    ILUCs Optional Equipment

All dimensions, weight and performances are for reference only and are subject to change without advice.
Each equipment can be custom made according customer specifications.

    Radio Control Unit

The REMACUT's clamps can be controlled by the new ILUC Radio Control System, through which it is possible to withdraw the electrical connection within the umbilical cable between the clamp and the control desk.

The REMACUT Radio Control System has been developed to operate also in small pipes (less than 6”) and on long distances. Actually it has been successfully  tested in 5” and 60 m long pipes.

The radio control is a bi-directional digital system that transmits and receives signals (digital information) both from control desk to ILUC and from ILUC to control desk. This feature allows the transmission of the ILUC functional commands to the machine and the reading and sending back of numerical values. This allows to transfer any analogical signal (load cell, oxygen analyser, proportional valves etc.).

The control desk can be integrated in existing systems or can be independently supplied, both portable or fixed. The supply power can be the barge power or a 24V battery pack.

The ILUC's equipment receives the power from an on board sealed 24V battery pack. Batteries usually can guarantee only few hours of power supply, but the clamps are equipped with on-board battery recharging units that are pneumatically driven. This provides the clamp a continuous operational capability without the necessity to stop the process and change the battery pack. The system include an alarm that alerts the operator if the battery charge is too low, with still some hour of power, so that he can start-up the battery charger in time.

For safety reasons, the radio transmitters and receivers use codified signals to avoid wrong signals to be interpreted as command. On each of them it is possible to select a code on a numerical key-pad to decide which clamp the operator wants to operate. This feature allows to operate at the same time with different ILUCs without interference.

The REMACUT radio control unit has been integrated so that it can be installed on any of the existing REMACUT clamps with small modifications.

    Purging System

Some welding specifications require that the process is performed under inert gas condition. The REMACUT's clamps can be equipped with a system that allows the purging of oxygen out from the chamber created between the pneumatic expander (when extracted) and the pipe inner surface.

This chamber can be pressurized with an inert gas. The inert gas is fed to the chamber through a quick release connection on the gas hose.

The system consists of two valves that direct the gas into the chamber and into inflatable joints. An oxygen analyser senses the oxygen quantity (p.p.m.) in the chamber.

The operation of the system is simple because it can be manually set before the clamp is introduced into the pipe. The purging cycle consists of two phases:

    • filling: two valves operate to charge the chamber and inflate the joints with the gas;

    • fine adjustment: one of the two valves operates to maintain the correct percentage of oxygen into the chamber.

The switching between the two phases is commanded by an external oxygen analyser.

    Spooling Winch

The REMACUT's internal line-up clamps can be equipped with a spooling winch that is used to automatically wind or unwind the rope that is connected to customer supplied buckle-detectors.

If requested, the winch is installed into the machine through a metallic support and is designed to allow the clamp to enter the pipe without tapping the rope between the pipe and the clamp frame. The winch is operated by an air-powered motor through a maintenance-free gearbox that is installed in the winch drum.

The pulling force may be adjusted through a pressure control. The unit is secured to an axial moving mount that allows the pulling force monitoring through a load cell. This load cell continuously measures the force applied by the buckle-detector. The detection of any possible strain load on the pipe is possible by plotting the force recording.

    Safety Parking Device

This subassembly has the purpose to temporary park the I.L.U.C. on the top of a pipe, during the operation in sloped pipelines.

The device consists of  one or two retractable levers that are actuated by a pneumatic jack. The levers are normally retracted within the front structure frame during the I.L.U.C operation. It is a typical equipment for J-Lay (double levers) or S-Lay (single lever) machines.

When the I.L.U.C. have to be parked for the connection or disconnection of the umbilical cable it is stopped on the top end of the pipe and the levers are extracted. The levers are provided with wheels in order to avoid the damage to the pipe inner walls when they are retracted and the I.L.U.C. is lifted or lowered or runs into the pipe.

    Safety Braking Device

The subassembly is also referred to as the "parachute braking device" and is hosted within the rear section. It is a Typical J-Lay equipment but can be installed also in small S-Lay machines that are not equipped with a motor safety brake.

The braking device has the purpose to stop the I.L.U.C in case of pneumatic power loss and/or umbilical disconnection. It consists of  two rollers installed at the top of two levers that are automatically extracted when the pneumatic power is lost.

Each lever is hinged on the subassembly structure and is pulled through a connecting plate by a pneumatic cylinder against the force of a reaction spring. When the pressure is no more sufficient to win the spring force, the levers expand and the rollers make friction against the pipe inner surface until blocking the machine.

    Position Control Device

This optional equipment consists of an optical transducer installed on the front structure of the clamp.

Its purpose is to signal to the control system when the machine reaches the end of the pipe, to stop it; this feature can be provided in order to ease the operator's job that, on the contrary, should pay much attention not to overcome the pipe end. This condition is particularly dangerous because the clamp could fall out from the pipe end with serious risks for the operators and the machine itself.

    Pneumatic Disconnection Device

The clamp can be provided with a pneumatic actuator that disconnect the umbilical quick connection.

    Lifting Umbilical

Depending on the customer specification, some umbilical cables are designed to withstand the weight of the equipment. In this case the machine umbilical connection is specifically designed to transmit the weight loads.

    Motorization Speed Control

The machine can be provided with a control system for the motorization subassembly, to improve the acceleration and deceleration performances of the machine and to ease the fine adjustment of its position around the welding section.
This optional subassembly includes valves to be installed in the pneumatic system and joysticks to be installed on the control desk.
The control system allows the fine speed adjustment in the range 0-1,5 m/s.

    Parking and sheltering equipment

The REMACUT ILUCs can be supplied with dedicated equipment for sheltering and parking puposes, to be used both in J-Lay and S-Lay or Double Joint operations.

This equipment is designed and manufactured for dedicated application and can be either a motorized structure or a fixed supporting frame.
